Proposta di ricerca
This proposal aims to get support for the ongoing coordinated collaborative research between Dr. Sprovieri (IIA-CNR, Italy) and Dr. Diéguez (INIBIOMA-CONICET, Argentina) involving the study of mercury (Hg) fluxes based on continuous time series measurements of atmospheric mercury in North Patagonia (Atmospheric Mercury Monitoring Station "Estación de Monitoreo de Mercurio Atmosférico", EMMA) at INIBIOMA-CONICET (Bariloche, Argentina). This monitoring master station was settled in the Field Station of the Photobiology Laboratory and started the operation (measuring Total Gaseous Mercury, TGM) in 2012, through funds provided by the Project "Global Mercury Observation System", 7Th Frame Program of the European Union (GMOS FP7-UE, PI: Dr. N. Pirrone)which integrates 47 monitoring sites worldwide (description of the station and operation in the Background Section).
In this framework, Dr. Sprovieri and Dr. Diéguez have been granted for the period 2012-2014 a CONICET-CNR cooperation grant to support the installation of new equipment (modules for the measurement of gaseous oxidized and reactive (GOM and RGM, respectively). This cooperation has made possible the training of argentine researchers on the equipment set up, operation and maintenance at the IIA in Rende(Italy) and at EMMA in Bariloche (Argentina). If granted, the present proposal would allow continuing the cooperation already established among research groups, enhancing the expertise of argentine scientists in atmospheric mercury monitoring, data quality assurance and control, and the analysis publication of results obtained in the EMMA and within the global network. The proposed extension of the cooperation aims advancing beyond the tasks of the previous collaborative grant, focusing on data analysis to obtain local and regional patterns of fluxes of mercury. At a further end, the proposed cooperation aims to integrate the expertise of argentine researchers, which involves the analysis of Hg in freshwater watersheds of North Patagonia and their biota, into a workpackage of GMOS project involving mercury fate in aquatic systems. Furthermore, researchers from Argentina may cooperate with IIA scientists in a cruise campaign in the Mediterranean, monitoring Hg in the ocean surface and along the water column, providing their expertise in fractionation of Hg in planktonic organisms. In this line, we there is a common interest on the investigation of fractionation of Hg in lakes from Southern Italy, and to compare the patterns found with analogous studies that are carried out in lakes of the NahuelHuapi National Park by the Argentinian group.
Obiettivi della ricerca
Atmosphere Hg:-To maintain the continuous monitoring Hg concentrations initiated in 2012 in the GMOS master station (Estación de Monitoreo de Mercurio Atmosférico,EMMA)at the INIBIOMA-CONICET.-To maintain the technical operability, intercalibration of the instruments and data intercomparison in compliance with the SOPs established in GMOS.-To keep the QA/QC of the Hg data from the EMMA, integrating them under the GMOS cyber-infrastructure operated by the CNR-IIA (Italy).-To analyze time series of atmospheric Hg concentrations to identify daily, weekly and seasonal patterns along with meteorological variables concurrently measured at EMMA.5-To relate the Hg values/patterns in air and precipitation samples arising from the EMMA measurements, with the Hg concentrations recorded in catchments of the NahuelHuapi National Park.6-To provide information about the Hg source in the atmosphere at a regional/local scale(Patagonia);7-To integrate regional/local information at a global scale through the GMOS global network to validate regional and global models of Hg circulation.Freshwater and Marine Hg:-To analyze the dynamics of Hg in a pristine freshwater catchment through Hg determination in different aquatic systems of the NahuelHuapi Lake catchment.-To relate the seasonal dynamics of Hg in the NahuelHuapi catchment with Hg concentrations in air and in precipitation.-To contribute in oceanic Hg measurements during cruise campaigns in the Mediterranean.
