IACS/IUGG - International Association of Cryospheric Sciences

In 2007, during the Perugia General Assembly, the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS) has become the eighth association within IUGG (International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics), replacing the International Commission on Snow and Ice (IAHS).

IACS objectives, to which all members of the scientific community are encouraged to contribute, are:

  • to promote studies of the Earth's cryosphere and other bodies in the solar system and related physical processes
  • to encourage research on the cryosphere science through collaborations and partnerships between individuals, institutions and research programs, both national and international
  • to provide international-level opportunities for discussion and publication of research results on the structures and processes of the cryosphere
  • to promote education and public awareness on the issues of the cryosphere
  • to facilitate the standardization of measures and the collection of data on the cryosphere and analysis, filing and publication of such data.
  • to promote the scientific activities of each Permanent Service positioned under the responsibility and scientific supervision of IACS.

IACS is responsible for the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) in close collaboration with ICSU World Data System.

IACS scientific fields are subdivided into Divisions:

  • Snow and Avalanches
  • Glaciers
  • Ice sheets
  • Sea Ice, Lake and River Ice
  • Cryosphere, Atmosphere and Climate
  • Planetary and other Ices of the Solar System

The role of the Divisions is to help the Association pursue its goals, coordinating the scientific activities, organizing meetings and promoting the exchange of information and data.
