IASPEI/IUGG - International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior

During the sixth International Congress of Geography (London, 1895), Professor G. Gerland (Germany) stressed the need for international cooperation in the field of seismology. At the Seventh Congress (Berlin, 1899), a permanent Commission Séismologique was created. The Association Internationale de Seismologie was then established at a later meeting in Strasbourg in 1903. At the first General Assembly of IUGG (Rome, 1922), it became one of the units constituting the Union. Its present name was decided at IUGG IX General Assembly held in Brussels in 1951.

IASPEI promotes the study of earthquakes and other seismic sources, the propagation of seismic waves, the inner structure of the Earth, its properties and its processes. Scientists participating in IASPEI’s activities promote and coordinate research and scientific exchanges that require cooperation among nations. The research work on specific subjects is carried out through committees, sub-committees, ad hoc committees and working groups nominated to address, in a specific way, the new challenging problems as they emerge. The structure of IASPEI and its many scientific activities can be classified under the following themes:

  • Physics and Chemistry of the Earth materials
  • Earth Structure and Geodynamics
  • Earthquake Sources - Prediction and Modeling
  • Tectonophysics
  • Earthquake Hazard, Risk, and Strong Ground Motion
  • Seismological Observation and Interpretation
  • Heat Flow
  • Education and Outreach

IASPEI is one of the eight associations of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG).
