IAMAS/IUGG - International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences

At the first IUGG General Assembly (Rome, 1922), the Section of Meteorology became one of the constituent sections of the Union. Its current name was taken of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences, in 1993. IAMAS promotes research in the field of atmospheric sciences, with special focus on programs requiring international cooperation. IAMAS leads the Alliance for Capacity Transfer (ACT) - a joint activity carried out by IUGG, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the U.S. University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).

IAMAS is one of eight associations of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG).

IAMAS consists of 10 International Committees on the following topics:

  • Atmospheric Chemistry and Global Pollution (ICACGP)
  • Atmospheric Electricity (ICAE)
  • Climate (ICCL)
  • Clouds and Precipitation (ICCP)
  • Dynamic Meteorology (ICDM)
  • Meteorology of the Middle Atmosphere (ICMMA)
  • Planetary Atmospheres and Their Evolution (ICPAE)
  • Polar Meteorology (ICPM)
  • Ozone (IOC)
  • Radiation (IRC)

In addition to the biennial IAMAS scientific assemblies, the commissions  organize a wide range of scientific meetings, open to scientists from  all over the world, playing a leading role in global communication and
