IAGA/IUGG - International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy

At IUGG first General Assembly (Rome, 1922), the Section de Magnétisme Electricité et Terrestres became one of the constituent sections of the Union and its current name was decided at the IUGG’s tenth General Assembly (Rome, 1954). IAGA gathers scientists who intend to devote themselves to research on magnetism and Aeronomy of the Earth and other bodies in the solar system, ionosphere and magnetosphere, the interplanetary tool and its interaction with these bodies. IAGA fosters workshops, symposia and research initiatives; through INTERMAGNET, it undertakes to update and standardize the parameters to measure the earth's magnetic field and to make them available to the scientific community.

IAGA consists of the following Divisions and Committees, with specific working groups on topics of interest:

  • Division I: Internal Magnetic Fields
  • Division II: Aeronomic Phenomena
  • Division III: Magnetospheric Phenomena
  • Division IV: Solar Wind and Interplanetary Field
  • Division V: Geomagnetic Observatories, Surveys, and Analyses
  • Interdivisional Committee on History
  • Interdivisional Committee on Developing Countries
  • International Service of Geomagnetic Indices

In Italy, IAGA research activities are developed in a number of universities and in major national research organizations, such as the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), the National Research Council (CNR). Further details on the Italian activities connected to the International Association of Geomagnetisms and Aeronomy can be collected accessing the following site which contains all the information http://www.iagaitalia.it/.
