IGBP - International Geosphere and Biosphere Programme

The International Geosphere and Biosphere Program, announced the termination of its activities on December 31st 2015.

At present, many of the IGBP activities, are being merged into the “Future Earth program” (http://www.futureearth.org/).

IGBP was a research program for the study of global changes. IGBP mission has been that of providing scientific knowledge aimed at improving the sustainability of living entities on Earth, by studying the interactions between biological, chemical, physical and human systems. Numerous were the collaborations with other programs, whose purpose was to developing and offering the necessary knowledge to respond to global changes. IGBP research goals were:

  • to analyze the physical, chemical and biological interactive processes, that determine the dynamics of the Earth System;
  • to monitor the changes that occur in these dynamics;
  • to study the role of human activities in these changes.
