Profile
Vito Pirrelli was hired as Director of the Institute for Computational Linguistics "Antonio Zampolli" of the National Research Council in January 2025. He received a degree in Humanities from the University of Pisa in 1985, and a PhD in Computational Linguistics from Salford University (UK) in 1993.
Research manager (Dirigente di ricerca) at the National Research Council since 2003, and head of the Laboratory for Communication Physiology, his main research interests focus on fundamental issues of language architecture and physiology, lying at the interdisciplinary crossroad of cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistics, neuroscience and information science.
He has been leading the national strategic projects "ReadLed", aimed at investigating reading development in primary school children, and "ReMind", focusing on the timely diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment through digital linguistic biomarkers. Between 2011 and 2015, he chaired NetWords, the European Science Foundation Research Networking Programme on Word Structure in the Languages of Europe, supported by more than 40 research labs in 16 European countries.
Co-editor in chief of The Mental Lexicon (John Benjamins) and Lingue e Linguaggio (il Mulino), in 2021 following a peer review by the relevant Class Committee, he was elected member of the Academia Europaea "... due to his outstanding achievements as a researcher".
