IAVCEI/IUGG - International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior

At the first General Assembly of IUGG (Rome, 1922), the Section de vulcanologie became one of the constituent Units of the Union. Its name was changed to Association Internationale de vulcanologie during the fourth General Assembly of IUGG (Stockholm, 1930).

Its current name was decided at the General Assembly in Moscow (1971). IAVCEI is the main international benchmark for research in volcanology and for the measures to be enforced to mitigate volcanic disasters. Researchers working in closely related disciplines such as geochemistry and petrology of igneous rocks, geochronology, vulcanogenic mineral deposits, as well as physics studying generation and ascent of magma in the upper mantle and crust, also collaborate with IAVCEI

IAVCEI's magazine is the Bulletin of Volcanology which has gained a good international reputation. Committees and Working Groups which in some cases are transversal and involve other associations of IUGG, play an important role for cultural promotion. These are fairly informal structures, slender, and gather researchers interested in specific topics and in organizing workshops, courses, field trips, aimed at comparing methodology and standardization of procedures; usually they have a portal for publishing news, research results, with forums for discussions. Many congresses and symposia are organized by these committees and working groups.

IAVCEI is one of the eight associations of the 'International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG).
