ISMN is internationally recognized as an institution of excellence in the field of nanomaterials and enabling processes. In this strategic field, the research activities are mainly focused on organic and hybrid electronics, optoelectronics, photovoltaics, mechanics, sensors and nano-medicine. The aims of this research line are:
The development of top-down, bottom-up and hybrid technologies for the fabrication of thin films and nanostructured systems integrated in nano and micro devices such as electronic components (OFET, LED, OLETs), functional coatings (smart surfaces), sensors (optical, thermal, biological), devices for information storage (TAG, memristor).
The growth of thin films, functionalized surfaces, nano-structured coatings with tribological, innovative, functional and aesthetic -decorative properties using advanced, low-impact, processes (i.e. wet methods, vacuum sublimation and ablation).
The development of methods for physic/chemical, morphological and structural characterization of nanostructured systems using state of the art, spectroscopic (UV / Vis, PL, NMR, CD); microscopic (optical and probe); surface (XPS, AES, XRF, UPS, SEM-EDS, AFM) and diffraction (XRD) techniques.
These activities are applied to:
multifunctional and multitopics materials (i.e. selective recognition of metal);
functional nanoparticles (metallic, magnetic, fluorescent, etc.);
organic and inorganic semiconductors, complex oxides;
metals;
polymers;
supramolecular systems;
chiral systems (i.e. enantioselective sensors);
hybrid, multifunctional magneto-electric devices, operating as sensors, memories and logic-gates;
natural fibres for the intelligent tissues;
control of surface wetting properties for technological applications (Es. self-cleaning surfaces) and functional membranes (i.e. the separation of immiscible fluids);
functional ceramic materials (i.e. for the manufacture of airborne radars).
