At http://vcg.isti.cnr.it/farnesina/loggia/, you can observe at a close distance both the beautiful stories of Cupid and Psyche to enjoy, with unprecedented detail, the fable of Apuleius, the vegetal and animals painted by Raphael and his assistants in Villa Farnesina, the Roman residence of the wealthy Sienese banker Agostino Chigi. At the same time, the interactive system allows you to consult the sought-after contents on the Loggia of Cupid and Psyche such as, for example, historical-archival information, the reconstructive hypotheses of the Loggia's decorative system, the drawings, photographs, and matrices of the Regia Cartografia (Central Institute for Graphics), as well as the results of non-invasive scientific analyses carried out in recent years. The system has been created innovatively to manage a very high-definition survey efficiently. It has been designed for a general public now familiar with virtual fruition systems based on panoramic images such as, for example, the various viewers of urban contexts as Google Street View. Therefore, it is easily accessible, limits the loading times of information as much as possible, and offers intuitive orientation tools throughout the navigation that can be used by touching or clicking on the icon with the question mark visible on the navigation bar of the Loggia and the image of in-depth sheets. The texts are accessible but complete and accurate to be attractive to a broad audience.
The ISTI-CNR Visual Computing Lab developed this interactive online system as part of the Framework Program Agreement between the National Research Council and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, stipulated on 12 July 2012 (CNR N. 535-BIS / 12. REP. ON CNR N. 2584 | 112).
The project was initially conceived as an "ordinary" program as part of the celebrations for the fifth centenary of the death of Raffaello Sanzio. After, it was rethought and promoted on the Web by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in synergy with the National Research Council, during the global health COVID-19 emergency waiting to return to see live the magnificence of Villa Farnesina and the exhibitions dedicated to the great artist in Villa Farnesina (http://www.villafarnesina.it/). The access numbers to the "Digital Loggia" confirm the high approval found by the system, cited in the prestigious Giornale dell'Arte in May among the "136 reopening projects in Italy and around the world". It seems to represent a virtuous model of communication of the artwork and its contents on the Web.
The pandemic, on the other hand, has upset the plans, forcing the Villa Farnesina and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei to reorganize the calendar and, at the same time, to implement their digital apparatus to promote knowledge of its heritage even outside its visitors
