Abstract
aSTAR aims to implement X-ray attosecond spectroscopy to reveal the fundamental forces driving electron dynamics and leading to the physics related to topological phase transitions. Topological effects
are predicted in materials with a strong spin-orbit interaction, which is time-reversal symmetry invariant. The non-trivial topological order reveals itself with metallic states at the surface and an insulating bulk
character. Topological insulators are the desirable vehicle to enable a Copernican revolution in nanoelctronics, where efficient charge transport on a large scale is needed to overcome the high-energy
dissipation due to heating in chips at the nanoscale, affecting both performance and cost. The understanding and control of the physics of exotic materials is mandatory to make such platform technologically
reliable
