Abstract
The European Training Network (ETN) FOIE GRAS: Bioenergetic Remodeling in the Pathophysiology and Treatment of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is an international doctoral school sponsored by H2020 Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions that will train 13 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs).
FOIE GRAS link extensive expertise in liver diseases, metabolism research, gut-liver crosstalk and science in society, hosted in distinguished universities and academic institutions, together with biotechnological companies and one patient's association, located in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland and Portugal. The ESRs will have access to this inter/multidisciplinary expertise, timely technology transfer know-how and international exchanges within an excellent training programme.
Goals
NAFLD aetiology can be summarized as an initial benign phase characterized by high fat oxidation rates and abundant cellular energy charge, whose progress to more severe states is marked by a paradoxical decline in these parameters and accompanied by oxidative stress. Mitochondria are the nexus between energy generation and fat oxidation, and are also both victims and propagators of oxidative stress.
The central objective of the project is to understand NAFLD progression in terms of hepatic mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative damage, including understanding the disruption of Krebs cycle circuits during NAFLD progression.
A secondary objective is to develop modified antioxidants which are specifically directed towards mitochondria and which can be used to investigate the role of oxidative stress in NAFLD progression
