Services

The expertise of the researchers and the facilities of the CNR-INSEAN provide technical-scientific consulting to industry, shipyards, civil and military projects connected with hydrodynamics, hydroelasticity, hydroacoustics and vibration, with applications to various fields of maritime technology, such as eco-sustainable and safe naval transport, sustainable exploitation of the sea and technology for the production of renewable energy from the sea.

INSEAN's test facilities - among the largest in the world - are included among the CNR Oceanographic Infrastructures. Equipped with cutting-edge instrumentation and measurement systems, they are operated by researchers and technologists with the help of highly skilled technicians.
INSEAN's laboratories provide for the construction and equipment of almost all the prototypes and models that are tested in the facilities. Among the most relevant facilities, we highlight:
- "Umberto Pugliese" Towing Tank: (470 m × 13.5 m × 6.5 m), equipped with a towing carriage with a maximum speed of 15 m/s, used for all calm water tests, even with large-sized models.
- "Emilio Castagneto" Seakeeping Tank: (220 m × 9 m × 3.5 m) equipped with a towing carriage of a max speed of 10 m/s and with an oscillating bulkhead wave generator able to replicate regular and irregular sea spectra, for the study of safety, comfort and operability of marine vessels;
- Circulating Water Channel: test section: 10 m long, 3.6 m wide and 2.25 m deep, capable of a max speed of the water of 5 m/s. It is the world's largest facility of this kind (depressurizable, with the free surface) and capable of a minimum pressure of 4 kPa.
- Cavitation Channel: test section 5 m long, 0,6 m wide and 0,6 m deep, capable of a max speed of the water of 15 m/s.
- Maneuverability facility: CNR-INSEAN has an experimental station at Nemi's lake, close to Rome, available for conducting self-propelled tests on marine vehicles, especially free-running maneuvering tests on large scale models.
- Ditching facility: Available for high-speed test of emergency landing at sea, maximum speed of 50 m/s (180 km/h), with adjustable angle of landing between 6° and 10°.
