Profile

Marcella Devoto has served as Director of the Institute of Genetic and Biomedical Research (IRGB) of the National Research Council since October 10, 2025; she previously held the same position at the Institute from 2020 to 2024.

She is also an Associate Professor of Medical Genetics at Sapienza University of Rome and Professor Emerita at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. With a degree in Statistics and Demography from the University of Bologna and an M.Sc. in Applied Statistics from the University of Oxford, she has built an internationally renowned scientific and academic career in the fields of human genetics, medical genetics, and genetic epidemiology.

Throughout her career, she has held teaching and scientific leadership positions in Italy and the United States, including at Columbia University, Rockefeller University, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Her research has focused on identifying the genetic determinants of Mendelian and complex diseases. She is the author of over 190 peer-reviewed publications and a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Human Frontier Science Program Organization.
