Mission
The Institute of Molecular Genetics of the National Research Council (IGM) is a multidisciplinary research center that studies the genetic, molecular, metabolic, and mechanical mechanisms that influence the aging process, taking advantage of forty years long studies of the genetic and molecular processes of normal and pathological cells.
Our mission: The biological process of aging involves a progressive loss of function and homeostasis in tissues and organs, resulting in vulnerability to chronic and degenerative diseases. Among these, cancer, neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, metabolic, immune, and viral diseases are the most significant, as they represent the main causes of death and disability in the elderly population. These diseases are influenced by the cellular mechanisms that control the integrity of the nucleus and genome, cellular metabolism, and the mechanical properties of cells. With advancing age, all of these processes become less efficient, contributing to the aging of cells, tissues, and the entire organism.
The Institute's research is based on a holistic approach to the study of aging, focusing on the connections between the mechanisms controlling genome stability, the mechanical properties of cells, metabolic processes, and immune response, as well as the study of genetic syndromes that predispose to premature aging. The ultimate goal is to identify cellular processes that can be pharmacologically targeted to address aging-related pathologies.
