Description
The Institute of Molecular Genetics IGM-CNR "Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza" is a multidisciplinary center for the study of both normal and pathological cells through a systemic approach. Our mission is to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying various pathological conditions such as cancer, premature aging, genetic diseases and viral infections through the study of genome alterations and how those affect cellular metabolism and coordinated functions between cells in tissues and organs.
OUR APPROACH
IGM-CNR researchers combine different expertise in biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, genetics and bioinformatics, in a coordinated strategy aimed at generating new knowledge that, through a multidisciplinary approach, it can be translated into innovative therapies,.
OUR RESEARCH
The philosophy that guides our research can be summarized as "from cell to pathology". For us, in fact, the study of the genetic information, from DNA to proteins, and its pathological alterations represents the key to achieve our objectives: to provide better care and promote the health and well-being of society. Research at IGM-CNR is focused on some central themes:
o Genome stability and tumors
o Inherited genetic diseases
o Virocells
o Drug discovery and diagnostics
o Bioinformatic analysis of complex data
HIGH EDUCATION AND DIVULGATION
IGM-CNR has always been committed to higher education in the biological field. The Institute welcomes students of the Bachelor and Master of Science in Biology and Biotechnology and of the Doctorates of Research of the University of Pavia and the IUSS University School of Pavia, for the preparation of their experimental theses.
IGM-CNR also carries out divulgation activities through the organization of seminars in schools, Open Doors days and participation in events such as FameLab, European Researchers' Night and Biotech Week.
INTERNATIONAL DIMENSION
The researchers of IGM CNR carry out their research in the context of projects in collaboration with dozens of Italian and foreign research institutions all over the world. Organic collaborations are currently active with foreign institutions in many European and non-European countries (France, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, USA, Japan, Kuwait, Brazil).
OUR SERVICES
The expertise and advanced instrumentation of the IGM-CNR are made available to external subjects through existing technological platforms for:
- Bioinformatics analysis
- Image analysis
- Localization and analysis of subcellular structures
- Characterization of the biological activity of small molecules (Drug discovery)
- Preparation of cell cultures from tissue samples.
In addition, IGM-CNR coordinates the Italian Network for Laminopathies.
OUR STAFF
The IGM-CNR currently has 59 employees including researchers, technicians and administrative staff, distributed between the main location in Pavia, a secondary location at the IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli in Bologna, a workplace at the University of Chieti and a Research Unit at the FIRC Institute of Molecular Oncology IFOM in Milan. Many young people are present in training activities such as students, doctoral candidates and fellows.
