Institute of neuroscience (IN)

Research activities

INTRODUCTION
This Institute wishes to contribute, by competence and expertise, to the solution of the many basic biological problems still unaddressed in the neuroscience field. In this respect it assigns special consideration to both clinical and therapeutical implications stemming from the aforementioned approaches.

RESEARCH THEMES
At CNR, the Institute of Neuroscience carries out its own Research along 3 main axis:
(i) To advance the understanding of the molecular, cellular and genetic processes at the base of the Nervous System: from simple developing neuroblasts to deployed nervous circuits passing through the tissue-based organisation of the brain. From isolated biological processes to interrelated bio-physiological and psychological stimuli leading to behavioural choices. From circuit lesions at centre or periphery to the mechanisms which assure a complete functional recovery.
(ii) To encourage the development of innovative therapeutic approaches, diagnosis or preventive actions stemming from basic research (i) and addressed against actual neurological and psychic diseases even through the epidemiological analysis of their frequency, distribution and risk factors.
(iii) To strengthen the development of experimental psychobiology in order to promote new methods to master information, in the attempt to support or recover compromised higher cerebral functions such as learning, memory, attention, and so on.
The research themes were expanded in 2014 to include the development of mathematical models to predict for the effects of metabotropic drugs in physiopathological conditions, together with the use of mathematical models aimed to the elaboration of myoelectric signals in order to accomplish robotic exoskeletons for muscle rehabilitation.

Institute of Neuroscience -(ROMA) : Starting from year 2010, a former Research Unit based in Rome was grouped with the CNR Institute Institute of Cell Biology and Neurobiology.
