Mission

The Institute conducts research activities in the following main areas:

a) Large-scale systematic characterization of genetic variability and its phenotypic consequences in human populations, through the integration of:

i. Elucidation of the genetic structure of the populations under study and their evolutionary dynamics.

ii. Identification of the genetic determinants of multifactorial and monogenic diseases of interest to the research groups across the Institute's sites.

iii. Analysis of quantitative traits of biomedical interest and, where possible, their correletion with the discrete traits (diseases) under investigation.

b) Epidemiology of diseases of interest.

c) Analysis of epigenetic modifications and gene-environment interactions.

d) Targeted functional studies in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo (including those using appropriate animal models) to understand the pathogenic mechanisms underlying the diseases investigated through genetic approaches.

e) Regenerative medicine studies based on gene and cell therapy approaches.

f) Translation of research findings into clinical applications, particularly in the diagnostic and therapeutic fields, through the identification of novel therapeutic targets and the development of assays to test compounds of potential interest in vitro and in vivo for the treatment of diseases studied within the Institute.
