Institute Experimental Endocrinology and Oncology "Gaetano Salvatore" (IEOMI)

Description

Institute of Endotypes in Oncology, Metabolism and Immunology "G. Salvatore" - IEOMI

On the basis of recent activites and ongoing projects, the scientific areas are based on the characterization of molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the development of different pathologies. This approach is defined as the study of endotypes, intended as the correlation and integration between genetic-epigenetic issues and environmental/phenotypic aspects mainly described from non-coding RNA profiles, as well as lipid, carbohydrate and protein profiles (including post-translational, PTMs).The general objectives include the identification of pathology markers, both for diagnostics and monitoring and also for target therapies, integrating fundamental and applied research.

These activities will increasingly have to be developed in a systems vision (Systems Biology/Medicine) to be able to strive for a more personalized medicine.

The general areas described above, although diversified by origin and environmental context, are interconnected with each other and shared by pathogenetic and metabolic alterations.

An important part of the activity of the Institute regards the infrastructures BBMRI, for the collection and distribution of biological material and Eurobioimaging, specialized in the various aspects of microscopy and live imaging. The combination of high resolution images of cellular structures with omic analysis, also supported by the collaboration with IR Elixir, will allow to increase the precision of molecular-cellular profiles (Precision Medicine). Furthermore, the participation in BBMRI will permit the Institute to integrate its cellular models (2D and 3D) and animals, with human specimens (real life).

The two IR will place the Institute in a favorable competitive position, the must be exploited and developed in the near future.

Finally, activities already underway in the Institute will continue be developed and have made public through Communication to the population of ongoing research, the Dissemination of Information of the results and their Use (Exploitation) in the scientific community and territory.
