Mission
he mission of the Institute is to develop both fundamental and applied research, together with advanced training, in order to consolidate the institute as a center of scientific research with a proven national and international reputation. The activities are aimed at maintaining ICCOM at the forefront in the various fields of scientific research in molecular sciences.
As established in Article 2, paragraph 3 of Provision No. 122/2026 of the President of the CNR, the Institute conducts research and all other activities provided for in Chapter VI of the Organization and Operation Regulations in the following main thematic areas:
- design and development of highly selective and efficient processes and catalysts for the sustainable production of chemical substances;
- design, synthesis, even under extreme conditions, characterization, and modeling of organic, inorganic, and hybrid polymeric materials and their functional properties;
- innovative methods and technologies for the production and storage of clean and safe energy from renewable sources;
- recycling of industrial waste and byproducts for the production of high-value compounds and the replacement, recovery, and reuse of critical raw materials;
- development of analytical, spectroscopic, and theoretical-computational methods for the study of chemical and biochemical processes and innovative materials.
The Strategic Research Areas contribute to specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda, specifically: Sustainable Consumption and Production (SDG 12), Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), Climate Action (SDG 13), Business, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Health and Well-Being (SDG 3).
