Profile

Dr. Stefano Fabris (PhD 2000) is Research Director of the National Research Council (CNR) of Italy and since 1/9/2023 is the director of the Department of Physics and Technologies of Matter of CNR. His scientific expertise is centred in the field of high performance computing applied to materials modelling and simulation. In this area, he represents Italy in The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), leads the spoke Materials and Molecular Sciences of the National Centre for High Performance Computing, Big Data and Quantum Computing, and is a member of the Italian expert group in Horizon Europe Cluster 4 "Digital, Industry and Space". Previously he directed the CNR-IOM Istituto Officina dei Materiali (2018-2023), the CNR-IOM theory unit at SISSA International School for Advanced Studies (2014-2018) and the theory group at the Italian synchrotron facility Elettra in Trieste.

Fabris has contributed to the field of computational materials science and theory of nanostructure materials with 100+ papers, which so far has received 35000+ citations (google scholar, september 2023), and delivered 60+ invited talks and lectures at international conferences and workshops.

For his research, Fabris has received numerous international awards, including the Friedrich W. Bessel Prize from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2015), the Presidential Prize of the National Academy of Chinese Sciences (2015), and is an honorary member of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Munich (2016). Renowned scientific institutions worldwide have invited him as a visiting scientist, including the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Centre Européen de Calcul Atomique et Moléculaire CECAM, the National Institute for Materials Science in Japan, the Technische Universität München, and the Beijing Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Fabris actively contributes to the scientific community as a member of the Advisory Editorial Board of the international journal Surface Science (Elsevier) and as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Materials for Renewable and Sustainable Energy, published by Springer Ed.
