Abstract

PRIN 2017 - 20179FLH4A - BEST-FOOD - Lorenzo Crocco
Food industry is one of the main and worldwide recognized assets of Italian manufacturing. In this framework, foreign body contamination, packaging failures, or items with poor characteristics are among the main sources of customers' complaint, resulting in loss of brand loyalty and large recall expenses. Currently, different technologies are adopted to cope with this problem, but the occurrence of incidents remains significant.
The BEST-Food project will develop a novel electromagnetic diagnostic technology for the multi-resolution assessment of product quality within the food-production chain, i.e., with no need to interrupt the fabrication process.

Obiettivi

The BEST-Food project will develop a novel electromagnetic diagnostic technology for the multi-resolution assessment of product quality within the food-production chain, i.e., with no need to interrupt the fabrication process. In particular, thanks to the interplay among different portions of the electromagnetic spectrum (microwaves and terahertz), the project will demonstrate the capability of an integrated device to detect foreign bodies (e.g., plastic or glass fragments), reveal packaging damages, and assess surface texture and internal properties. Such an aim will be addressed by investigating the capabilities and limitations of both microwaves and terahertz, as well as by designing, implementing and assessing with controlled experiments a prototypal device able to perform the pursued tasks.
