Abstract

Secondary plant metabolites, which are often biologically active compounds, have gained interest among scientists, food and drink manufacturers for their roles in food preservation and maintenance of human health in terms of chronic disease management. In particular, phenolic compounds are broadly distributed in plant kingdom and represent the most abundant secondary metabolites. In recent years, plant phenolic have drawn increasing attention due to their potent antioxidant properties and their marked effects in the prevention of oxidative stress-associated diseases. For these reasons in the last years researchers have addressed their studies to optimize the production of these compounds and their use as additives to foodstuff or in packaging system to preserve food.In this context flax (Linum sspp) has considerable potential as a source of phytochemicals.Lignans possess anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative as well as cytotoxic and antitumor effects. The aim of this project is to improve the production of lignans through cell cultures properly elicited and using biotechnological approaches and the metabolic engineering of the biosynthetic pathway of interest.
