Abstract
Wildfires can have devastating effects on aquatic ecosystems by altering water quantity and quality available for multiple use such as domestic, agricultural, industrial and ecological needs. The relationship between fires and water quantity and quality has been addressed in various studies mainly focusing on their impacts on the quality of water supply in forest fire-prone watersheds (U.S., Australia); less fire-prone forest and non-forest watersheds are less analysed. Moreover, the effect of wildfires on water quality are less commonly reported compared to the effects on terrestrial ecosystems or on hydrology of burned catchments.
The overall objective of the project is to use the fire and lakes ECVs and other global products to examine the impact of the increasing incidence and severity of wildfires on lakes.
