Abstract
Polarization, megnetization and other geometrical/topological properties of the electronic ground state.
Goals
This proposal concerns physical observables of materials (crystalline and non-crystalline) whose theoretical root is in geometrical and topological properties of the electronic ground state; the proposal also concerns the implementation of algorithms to compute such properties. The archetype in this class of observables is the macroscopic electric polarization of solids, for which first-principle understanding dates since 1992 onwards; other observables followed over the years. Such observables have very different experimental meanings, yet they show a common formal structure from a theoretical viewpoint.
