Abstract
This project aims at investigating the role of innovation and technological change in facing global societal challenges. It addresses the conditions for a new economic recovery in a world context characterized by increasing competition and environmental fragility. The acquisition of knowledge is the key factor for economic development and well-being.
The project will seek to answer the following research questions:
i) How innovation could provide a viable strategy to overcome the economic crisis and guarantee development. Is there a potential new techno-economic paradigm?
ii) What is the impact of the international diffusion of emerging technologies?
iii) Can green and digital technologies lead to greater social inclusion?
iv) The impact of technological change and international diffusion of technologies in addressing the challenge of climate change and the connected extreme events. How can adverse events be addressed and mitigated?
Goals
Six main objectives will be addressed in the project.
The first objective is to understand how emerging technologies are actually transforming the nature of labor and skills.
The second objective is devoted to generate a new method able to identify the vertically integrated intensity of green and digital technologies of each sector.
The third objective will be devoted to the composition of trade. Industries will be classified according to two parameters: a) green and non-green; b) qualified and non-qualified skills.
The fourth objective will be devoted to address the investment drop after major economic crisis, which has affected Europe more than other regions of the world. To what extent is this associated to perceived declining innovative opportunities?
The fifth objective is to the impact of extreme adverse climatic conditions. Is there a connection between adverse climatic conditions on the one hand and social disasters on the other hand?
The sixth and last objective will assess the vulnerability of various areas to climate-induced extreme events and evaluate the innovative responses that could be provided.
