Abstract

Large-scale modification of land use due to agricultural and sylvicultural practices and changes in the prevailing climate provoke both direct behavioural responses of populations, as well as indirect responses due to their impact on resource availability and, hence, demographic performance. In view of the time-scale, phenotypic plasticity is an important component underlying a species' capacity to accommodate these rapid environmental modifications. Animal populations have accommodated seasonal changes in their environment by migrating. Indeed, migration between distinct seasonal ranges is widespread and observed in taxa as different as invertebrates, fishes, birds and mammals Ungulate migration typically occurs along elevational or latitudinal gradients affecting onset of plant growth, and partial migration, where only a fraction of a population is migratory, is common..
