Abstract
The objective of the CIRCOL project is to improve the altimeter-derived (geostrophic) currents in the Mediterranean Basin, whose present-day spatial-temporal spectral responses are mostly in the mesoscale range. The altimeter geostrophic currents are presently provided by the Sea-Level Thematic Assembly Center (SL-TAC) processing system, developed at Collecte Localisation Satellites (CLS) and distributed via the Copernicus Marine and Environmental Monitoring Service (CMEMS). These geostrophic currents data have daily frequency and nominal horizontal resolutions of 0.125 degrees (~10 km), though the effective spectral content indicates spatial and temporal resolutions of the order of one week and ~100 km, respectively [Pujol et al. (2012)]. Our goal is to implement a surface currents reconstruction method that combines the large-scale, altimeter-derived geostrophic currents with the high-resolution dynamical information contained in the daily satellite-derived surface Chlorophyll concentration (CHL) observations.
