Abstract
Today, despite unprecendented progresses, viral infections still represent one of the main concerns for global health. The recent advances in gene sequencing highlighted how our knowIedge on the virome is
limited to the tip of the iceberg. Global traveling, mass migration, and the interaction between humans and wild animals have increased the possibility for emerging and re-emerging viruses. Detection of new
viruses has an arsenal of potent tools, on the contrary development of antivirals lags behind. Our integrated approach to develop viral entry inhibitors aspires to begin filling this significant gap. The best way
to counteract viral infection is prevention, and our focus on the early stages of viral infection reflects this vision. In this application we plan to identify strategies that target both the host and the pathogens.
First, new potential antivirals for known viruses will be identified. Second, new tools to investigate viral infection will be generated. Third, the knowledge on the viral biology will be augmented. Fourth, an
interactive network centered in the south of Italy with a critical mass focused on viral pathogenesis and effective countermeasures will be formed.
