Abstract

ACTION aims to develop bifunctional advanced injectable materials for bone cancer treatment, able to inhibit cancer cell proliferation and in the same time to stimulate the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of healthy cells inducing a new bone tissue formation/mineralization. These systems will be developed by exploiting the properties of 2D materials and their combination with osteoinductive calcium phosphates based materials. In particular, 2D materials such as graphene oxide (GO) and exfoliated black phosphorus (2D bP) can be used as alternative tools for bone metastases treatment. 2D materials can be loaded in micelles and subsequently incorporated into injectable organic-inorganic hybrid materials.

Goals

Key steps involve:
- development of hybrid injectable materials based on natural polymers and calcium phosphate;
- incorporating (2D bP, GO) loaded stearoyl-PEG-polySDM micelles into hybrid materials;
- development of modified cellulose nanofibers -based on Calcium phosphate and free GO hybrid materials;
- investigation of injectable biomaterials in an in vitro model that mimic the bone tumor microenvironment;
- in vivo injectable materials validation on a defined model of human bone metastatic tumor.
