Abstract

European Open Life Science Cloud (EOSC-Life) brings together the 13 Biological and Medical ESFRI research infrastructures (BMS RIs) to create an open collaborative space for digital biology. It is a joint response to the challenge of analysing and reusing the prodigious amounts of data currently produced by life science research. Managing and integrating this data is beyond the capabilities of most individual end-users and institutes.
By publishing data and tools in a Europe-wide cloud EOSC-Life aims to bring the capabilities of big science projects to the wider research community. Federated user access will allow transnational resource access and authorisation. EOSC-Life establishes a novel access model for the BMS RI: through EOSC scientists will gain direct access to findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable (FAIR) data and tools in a cloud environment available throughout the European Research Area.
EOSC-Life will make BMS RIs data resources FAIR and publish them in the EOSC following reference guidelines and standards. Overall this will drive the evolution of the RI repository infrastructure for EOSC and integration of the BMS RI repositories.

Goals

The overarching aim of EOSC-Life is to achieve its shared vision of an Open Collaborative Digital Space for European Life Science where scientists will have access to advanced technology platforms, samples and support services throughout the European Research Area (ERA) and where the resulting data is available for use and reuse through the EOSC in full compliance with all ethical, regulatory and legal requirements.
The strategy is based on open, excellence-based calls for interdisciplinary data publishing and reuse, and open community collaboratories, where life scientists can access the data and tools via the EOSC, supported by BMS RIs data experts.
EOSC-Life will deliver its vision through three specific project objectives, linked to measurable outcomes, that connect work across the work packages and participating infrastructures:
Objective 1: Establish EOSC-Life by publishing FAIR life science data resources for cloud use
Objective 2: Create an ecosystem of innovative life-science tools in EOSC
Objective 3: Enable ground-breaking data driven research in Europe by connecting life scientists to EOSC
