Abstract
Water Insight BV is a private commercial company (SME) born as a spin-off (2005) from the Institute of
Environmental Studies IVM at the Free University of Amsterdam. The mission of WI is to develop
operational and commercially viable water remote sensing instruments, products and services using
integrated close-range and satellite-borne sensors (networks). The company has developed its own handheld
water quality scanner, the WISP-3 for collecting optical in situ measurements and is currently
developing the next generation WISP-3 as well as an autonomous fixed position optical system for
permanent monitoring. Water insight has also developed a multispectral spectral video camera system and
participates in the development and validation of low-cost and easy-to-operate instruments (such as the
iQwtr) that allow citizens to measure water transparency with their smartphones
