Abstract

We are witnessing an explosion in the use of position-enabled devices. These movements are represented not only as GPS-based sequences of spatio-temporal points, but they are linked to semantics, as they are associated to several heterogeneous dimensions. These semantically rich, multiple aspects user movements are called holistic trajectories to better convey the idea that these trajectories, as collected or inferred from the vast amount of user-generated data, are "characterized by the belief that the parts of something are intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole." A holistic trajectory is therefore a new concept of movement objects where the spatio-temporal aspect is not necessarily the main component and several heterogeneous dimensions are interconnected to form a whole novel vision. The heterogeneous nature of holistic trajectories calls for new methods capable of combining these different natures. The research objective of the MASTER project is to investigate methods to build, manage and analyse trajectories "ready to use". In MASTER we will investigate innovative analysis methods for these new forms of data.

Goals

The overarching objective of the MASTER (Multiple ASpects TrajEctoRy management and analysis) project is to form an international and inter-sectoral network of organisations/partners working on a joint research programme in the field of holistic trajectories. From a scientific point of view, we build, manage and analyse holistic trajectories by considering as vital issues the privacy and big data related aspects. We propose ways to analyze and infer knowledge from multiple aspects, then, ultimately, use the resources in an innovative way, into practical and useful applications: tourism, sea monitoring, public transportation. The participants will exchange skills and knowledge which will allow them to progress towards key advances in the research field, and strengthen research collaborations between different countries and sectors. Advances in holistic trajectory data management and analysis will have potential market opportunities for non-academic participants in the project and significant benefit for the European society. The staff members who participate in the project will develop new skills and have their career perspectives widened.
