The activity is concerned with the physics of atoms and their interactions with the laser radiation. It can be framed into strands which, starting from patterns of laser-atom nonlinear interaction, develop in the manipulation of the atomic motion, laser cooling and realization of Bose-Einstein condensates. The optical manipulation of the latter led to more general inquiries concerning issues of superfluidity and quantum macroscopic phenomena. More recently, the activities covered micromanipulation techniques with broad perspectives ranging from the field of quantum computing to the mechanical manipulation of single biomolecules to advanced sensors.
