Profile

Director of the Istituto di Geoscienze e Georisorse - CNR since 2024. Joined IGG-CNR as a researcher in 1999 and, since 2021, has been a Senior Researcher. Participates as a CNR expert in the "Tavolo Tecnico interministeriale MIMIT - MASE sulle Materie Prime Critiche" and the "Tavolo Tecnico Litio Geotermico" della Piattaforma Geotermia coordinated by the National Council of Geologists.
Research Interests: Earth System Dynamics. Magmatic-hydrothermal systems and water-rock interaction, with particular attention to mineral deposits and geothermal systems, to understand mass-energy transfer processes in the Earth's lithosphere and the Critical Zone.
Awards and Invitations: "Johndino Nogara" Award from the Italian Society of Mineralogy and Petrology in 2007 (research on mineral deposits); Visiting Professor at the University of Geneva (Switzerland) in 2014-15.
Professional Activity: Coordinator for the projects "Timescales of crustal magmatism and associated hydrothermal systems in Tuscany and implications for the geothermal field of Larderello" (Swiss National Science Foundation; 2014-15), the project "Ion Microprobe analysis of Boron, oxygen and hydrogen isotopes in hydrothermal systems" (Herbette Foundation, Lausanne, Switzerland; 2014-15), and the CNR Youth Agency project "B, O, Sr, Nd isotopes, fluid inclusions, mineral chemistry of tourmaline in Tertiary granitic rocks from Tuscany (Italy): implication for crustal processes and the geochemical behavior of boron". Coordinated WP4 (Reservoir Characterization) of the Horizon 2020 Project: "DESCRAMBLE" (Drilling in deep, Super-CRitical AMBients of continental Europe) and was responsible for the CNR local unit in the PRIN-MUR 2008 project (Magma flow and growth of tabular igneous intrusions) and PRIN-MUR 2017 project (TEOREM - deciphering geological processes using Terrestrial and Extraterrestrial ORE Minerals). Responsible for the IGG Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory (2002-2015), the Mineral Separation and Rock Repository Labs (2016-2024), and the Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Automated Mineralogy Laboratory (2024-). Elected member of the Scientific Board of DSSTTA (2019-2023) and the IGG Institute Board (2008-2019). Participated in the XXI Italian Antarctic Expedition (2005-2006) and in several expeditions on mineral deposits worldwide.
Scientific Activity: Author of more than 100 publications in international scientific journals (ISI). Editor of two special journal issues. H-index: 32 (Scopus). Author of popular science articles and books.
