Webinar on Climate in-situ data: from measurements to applications

The Institute of methodologies for environmental analysis of the National Research Council of Italy (Cnr-Imaa) as the lead contractor for the Copernicus contract "Comprehensive Upper-Air, Baseline and Reference in situ observations" is organizing in collaboration with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) a cycle of three Webinars on the use of in situ climate data. A wide range of data and services have already been provided under the Copernicus contract for the implementation of the C3S "Climate Data Store - CDS," which is one of the main hubs, open and free, for access to data of interest for climate study and monitoring.

The European Union Copernicus programme offers information services that exploit data from satellite Earth Observation and in-situ observations of our environment. In-situ observations are collected by platforms that are ground-based, seaborne, or airborne, using a myriad of sensors, instruments, and techniques across all domains (atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, and biosphere).

The wide range of in-situ atmospheric monitoring networks, measurement programs, and research infrastructures, represent many sources of datasets, covering several Essential Climate Variables. This diversity is a crucial element to enrich the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) Climate Data Store and to support users in their applications, including to evaluate other datasets (e.g., satellite-based, numerical models). Owing to their observation of local conditions, in-situ data are essential to support sustainable development goals and for efficiently planning and implementing appropriate adaptation measures.

The purpose of the webinars is to train users in the exploitation of CDS in-situ atmospheric datasets, for climate studies and applications.

Target audience: scientists, university students, phd students, agencies, companies, stakeholders.

A cycle of three Webinars will be held by internationally acknowledged and top-level scientists on climate in-situ data within European Union Copernicus and Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).

These are the webinar topics:

- Atmospheric chemistry and physics: ozone – Martine De Maziere (BIRA-IASB), Elizabeth C Weatherhead (the University of Colorado and Jupyter intelligence) - 3rd May 2023

- Near-surface and upper air climate data – A. Merlone (INRiM), P. Thorne (Maynooth University) - 10th May 2023

- Total column water vapour – June Wang (University of Albany) - 19th May 2023

This is a unique opportunity for users who want to learn more about climate data, their measurements, and their applications.
