Prof. John Milton Lucocq (Structural Cell Biology Group, Schools of Medicine and Biology, University of St Andrews, Scotland, UK) will give a virtual lecture on "Quantifying Golgi".

The organelle discovered by Camillo Golgi has a complex 3D membrane structure composed of cisternae, tubules, vesicles and cytoplasmic coats that can be revealed in detail using a range of electron microscopy (EM) tools. These tools include conventional imaging, FIBSEM, serial EM, EM-tomography or serial sections, all of which generate arrays of 2D images. The challenge is to use these images for accurate, efficient and high throughput quantitative sensing of 3D Golgi structures at high resolution. I will explain how sampling-based strategies can be applied to measure 3D quantities of Golgi structures across a range of intensities: from accurate and detailed readouts on individual cells, to aggregate 3D data on cell populations, or rapid phenotypic profiling that is suited to higher throughput.
