The resolution revolution in cryo-electron microscopy opens new avenues in molecular biology and drug design

Il 20/12/2019 ore 12.00 - 13.00

Sala Conferenze Cnr, Area della ricerca Na1, Via Pietro Castellino 111, 80131 Napoli

Prof. Beatrice Vallone (Department of biochemical sciences 'A. Rossi Fanelli', University of Rome 'La Sapienza' and Institute of molecular biology and pathology - Cnr, Rome - Italy) will give a seminar on innovative cryo-electron microscopy in molecular biology and drug design.

The mechanism of action of proteins is investigated by structural and biochemical characterization. This includes the structure-function relationship of enzymes and transporters as well as their role within signalling networks that involves protein-protein recognition and complex formation. The knowledge of the molecular mechanism exploited by proteins to carry out their function and involved in pathological processes is the starting point to design novel, targeted therapeutic strategies.

In this context, the main endeavour is the determination of protein structures by protein crystallography and, more recently, by single particle cryo-electron microscopy. Protein biochemical and biophysical characterization is carried out using a wide array of methods (kinetics, protein engineering, spectroscopy), protein engineering and chemical modification is exploited for biomedical and biotechnological applications.
