Round Table 23.05.2018.Roma

Joint Project between the Isgi of the Cnr and the Institute for Legal Studies of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) in the framework of the bilateral Agreement on Scientific Cooperation and Its Executive Protocol between the Cnr and the HAS.

Italy and Hungary have been in the forefront of European responses to the mass arrival of asylum seekers and are key to understand the shortcomings of the European legal framework, its incompleteness and the various attempts to rectify some of its shortcomings.

Facing, in many respects, similar difficulties, the two countries reacted in a completely opposite way. Italy has been active at the European level for the adoption of measures of solidarity and sharing of responsibilities. On the contrary, Hungary has closed its Southern border and adopted an anti-refugee legislation. Furthermore, the Hungarian Government has strong opposition to the relocation mechanism activated by the EU Commission.

The round table will highlight current trends as well as present and future challenges for the two countries and the EU in the management of migratory flows.
