M1 and M2 macrophages: immunologic assassins and annealers
Il 02/12/2015 ore 14.30 - 15.30
Sala Conferenze CNR, Via P. Castellino, 111 80131 Napoli
Dr. Charles D. Mills (BioMedical Consultants Marine on St.Croix, Minnesota, USA) will give a seminar on M1/Inhibit and M2/Heal-type macrophages that he discovered. He also showed that M1 and M2-type activity is independent of, and directs, other immune responses, including adaptive immunity. M1 and M2-type macrophages initiate and direct virtually all other immune responses including stimulating Th1 or Th2-type responses, respectively. The realization that macrophages/innate immunity is the central controlling element in all immune systems is a breakthrough in understanding how immune responses occur to provide host protection or, if imbalanced, to cause many diseases. This fundamental discovery has revolutionized immunology and opened up wholly new approaches for the immunotherapy of cancer, autoimmunity, atherosclerosis and other diseases. He studied at the University of Chicago, then at the Trudeau Instititue (where macrophage activation was discovered) and has been on the Faculty at Brown University and the University of Minnesota.
