Abstract

This project is intended to assess whether thallium cuprate performances can really match FCC requirements and specifically which could be its limits in terms of such performances. In particular, we intend to realize proof-of-concept prototypes, which could be measured in an ad-hoc surface impedance test set-up. In particular, a deep and complete sample characterization at high field at multiple frequencies is needed, followed by a careful theoretical data analysis. International collaboration will stay active with the USTEM-TUWIEN and ATI-TUWIEN for structural and transport characterization like in the previous project. Formal new collaborations with the Barcelona consortium and with the University of Roma Tre (for multifrequency measurements) will be activated.

Obiettivi

The minimization of the surface impedance of the beam screen is a key ingredient for stable beam operation in FCC. Beam screen coating with Tl based or Rare Earth Barium Copper Oxides (REBCO) based High-Temperature Superconductors (HTS) films or tapes has been considered to be a possible solution.
Surface impedance minimization in superconductors operating in high magnetic fields is mainly related to the maximization of the so-called "depinning frequency" of the material, so that its accurate determination for the HTS coatings under consideration for FCC beam screen coatings is an extremely important issue. Preliminary measurements on REBCO are very promising showing higher depinning frequency with respect to the expected value. On thallium based coating such a direct measure of this parameter is still lacking since experiment performed on pellets suffer of the weak links issue and the realization of strongly textured samples is necessary.
CNR-SPIN's proposal is on the continuation of the ending three years project about the study of Tl-1223 coatings, superconducting alternative material to copper for coatings in the beam screen for FCC-hh.
