Abstract

The Multi-actuator Adaptive Lens (M-AL) can correct up to the 4th radial order of Zernike polynomials, without any obstructions (electrodes, pixels or actuators) placed inside its clear aperture. As a transmissive optical element, it can be readily integrated with the most of the existing imaging systems to provide aberration correction for improving the quality of optical instruments. Its use in microscopy [1] and in ophthalmic instruments [2] have already been demonstrated in some recent publications. Furthermore, in the recent NICOP project between NRL and CNR-IFN we further develop the adaptive lens in order to be able to improve the performances of adaptive zoom developed at NRL [3]. In this latter case, the use of the multi-actuator adaptive lens was able to improve the performances of the adaptive zoom developed at NRL and based on polymer liquid lens.

Adaptive optics systems based on a single deformable mirror have been demonstrated to be able to correct for aberrations on axis. We propose to use a stack of multi actuator adaptive lenses in order to be able to generate and correct aberrations with all their spatial structure. This will allow the correction of the aberratio
