Abstract

Cities and urban communities have to cope with challenges related to poor air quality, heat island effects, flood risks, social exclusion and degraded urban environments, leading to a myriad of impacts on the health, quality of life, well-being and security of citizens in European cities, particularly among less privileged classes. In early 2018 the City of Prato has adopted a new Strategy for Urban Forest, aimed at limiting the consumption of soil by encouraging strategies for the recovery and reuse of existing areas and buildings.
In the framework of this Strategy, the PUJ project aims at re-naturing Prato's neighbourhoods in a sustainable and socially inclusive way by developing Urban Jungles (UJs) or high-densely green re-designed areas, immersed in the urban structure, that multiply the natural capacity of plants to abate pollutants, restore soil and space to community fruition, and turn marginal and decading areas into life-giving green active hubs within the city.

Obiettivi

The present solution goes beyond common urban forestry approaches by proposing the creation of Urban Jungles through an innovative co-design path that enhances the city's resilience and creates sustainable urban landscapes. The project will deliver a new strategic urban planning approach that, by engaging stakeholders through an innovative digital platform and governance model, can support more inclusive urban green development in the cities
