The Institute for research on innovation and services for development (Cnr Iriss) is proud to announce the contribution of its affiliates, Prof. Luigi Fusco Girard and Martina Bosone, to an international scientific pathway that culminated in the Regional Science Academy (TRSA) Manifesto on Climate Change and the New Wellbeing Society, released as a preparatory document for COP30 in Belém.
The process began in Naples on 1-2 October 2025 with the International Symposium “Design of Transformative Urban Systems” organized by Prof. Fusco Girard in collaboration with Cnr-Iriss. The meeting gathered international experts, including keynote speakers Carlos Moreno and Peter Nijkamp, to examine how urban systems can become drivers of climate resilience and human wellbeing. Discussions focused on the fragility of the Earth’s interconnected ecosystems and the need to reconnect climate science with daily habits, lifestyles, and cultural practices, particularly among younger generations. The symposium emphasized that climate action does not require halting economic growth, but redirecting it toward balanced, circular, and wellbeing-centered models that enhance green areas, soil and water quality, and cultural and natural heritage. Effective urban climate policies - such as regenerative programs, circular economy strategies, and environmental education - were highlighted for their potential “double dividend”: reducing environmental impacts while improving citizens’ wellbeing.
The reflections and contributions collected in Naples were subsequently deepened at the 2nd International Conference “The Transformative Economy - Human Capital Development, Co-creative Innovative Economy and Sustainable Inclusive Growth", held on 8-10 October 2025 in Yerevan, Armenia. Organized by Yerevan State University in collaboration with the Regional Science Academy, the conference offered an international platform to explore socio-economic transformation, digital innovation, spatial disparities, and climate challenges across regions. The event focused on how transformative economic models, supported by human capital development, co-creative innovation, and technological advancement, can contribute to sustainable and inclusive growth.
The multi-stage scientific dialogue initiated in Naples and expanded in Yerevan converged into the TRSA Manifesto on Climate Change and the New Wellbeing Society (Eds: Karima Kourtit, Peter Nijkamp). Developed through the Grand Estafette Model, a sequence of thematic meetings held internationally, the Manifesto presents a unified framework linking climate action, spatial development, and human wellbeing. Within the document, the section "Estafette 9: Design of Transformative Urban Systems", coordinated by Luigi Fusco Girard, Francesca Nocca, and Martina Bosone (University of Naples Federico II, Department of Architecture), highlights the importance of regenerative urban planning, circular economy approaches, and heritage-led development strategies.
The Manifesto calls for a shift from growth-centered economic paradigms toward a “New Wellbeing Society”, grounded in spatially sensitive climate governance, wellbeing metrics beyond GDP, proximity-based urban models such as the 15-minute city, climate justice, and the creation of regenerative and prosilient cities. It also stresses the need to integrate climate and SDG agendas into a coherent, long-term policy framework. Among its recommendations for COP30 are the empowerment of cities and regions as climate actors, the development of wellbeing-centered indicators, enhanced climate education, and stronger citizen participation through living labs and transparent data systems.
