An online event will take place on October 6, 2025, at 4:00 PM (CET) / 10:00 AM (EST) to present Fabrizio Baldassarri's book Descartes’s Natural Philosophy and Particular Bodies, recently published by Springer. The meeting will feature Daniel Garber and Deb Brown as discussants, and will be chaired by Igor Agostini.

The event is co-organized by the Descartes Laboratory at Cnr-Iliesi and the Centro Dipartimentale di Studi su Descartes – Ettore Lojacono at the University of Salento. Attendance is free and open to all those interested in the intersections of the history of early modern philosophy and science. For details, interested participants can write to cartesianlaboratory@gmail.com or francesco.casciaro@unisalento.it.

The book offers a reconstruction of Descartes’s natural history, exploring how he collected, observed, and experimented with a wide variety of bodies, including substances such as salt, gold, and metals, natural materials like stones, rocks, and magnets, as well as plants such as mimosa, sunflowers, and olive trees. Animals—cows, calves, sheep, fish, dogs—are also central to Descartes’s inquiries. Through this attention to particular bodies, the book outlines a methodologically grounded philosophical interpretation in which Descartes’s innovative view of nature gradually emerges.
