The "Descartes Laboratory" seminar is an online branch of the “Seminari Cartesiani di Villa Mirafiori”, organized by the Institute for the European Intellectual Lexicon and History of Ideas (Cnr-Iliesi) and La Sapienza Department of Philosophy.
The "Descartes Laboratory" is organized by Fabrizio Baldassarri and Simone Guidi, and it is planned to engage with the most recent works on Descartes as well as on 17th-century philosophy and natural philosophy connected with Cartesianism. The Laboratory involves PhD students, as well as post-doc researchers, giving them a space for discussion, which is of course open to anyone who would like to intervene.
The 25-26 programme includes four meetings on November 11, 2025 and January 27, March 27, and May 22, 2026: the event is in English, online and available at the "Descartes Laboratory" Seminar Scheduling 2025-2026.
The first meeting is scheduled on November 11, 2025, at 5 pm CET (Rome/Paris/Berlin/Amsterdam time), with the presentation of Steven Nadler's book "The Good Cartesian: Louis de La Forge and the Rise of a Philosophical Paradigm", Oxford University Press, 2024. Discussants will be Delphine Antoine-Mahut (ENS Lyon) and Carmine Taddeo (Università del Salento).
The second meeting is scheduled on January 27, 2026, at 3 pm CET (Rome/Paris/Berlin/Amsterdam time), with the presentation of Alice Ragni's book "Il secolo dell’ontologia (1606-1708)", ILIESI Digitale, 2024. Discussants will be Marco Lamanna (Università della Svizzera Italiana) and Lucia Oliveri (Universität Münster).
The third meeting is scheduled on March 27, 2026, at 3 pm CET (Rome/Paris/Berlin/Amsterdam time), with the presentation of Elodie Cassan's book "Le langage de la raison. De Descartes à la linguistique cartésienne", Vrin, 2023. Discussants will be Hélène Leblanc (ENS Lyon) and Giuseppe Pignatelli (Università di Torino).
The fourth meeting is scheduled on May 22, 2026, at 5 pm CET (Rome/Paris/Berlin/Amsterdam time), with the presentation of Marie-Frédérique Pellegrin and Clément Raymond's edited book "Descartes politique. Nouvelles considérations sur la pensée cartésienne", Garnier, 2024. Discussants will be Maria Giulia Sestito (Università di Padova) andTyler J. Thomas (Arizona State University).
