60th ISOCARP World Planning Congress "Reinventing The (In)visible Cities"
Dal 09/10/2024 ore 11.30 al 11/10/2024 ore 18.00
Siena
Under the theme “Reinventing the (In)Visible Cities: From Heritage to Innovation, Forging Pathways to Resilience,” the 60th World Planning Congress, organized by ISOCARP (the International Society of City and Regional Planners), will take place in Siena from October 8 to 12, 2024.
The congress aims to chart a course towards sustainable urban development by reimagining city planning and design to embrace innovation across various fields. Key topics will include urban regeneration, leveraging cultural heritage for sustainable development, and strategies to combat climate change. The overarching objective is to revitalize cities, dismantle systemic inequalities, and create a sustainable urban legacy for future generations.
The Institute for Research on Innovation and Services for Development (Cnr Iriss) research group working on urban planning, represented by Giuseppe Pace and Gabriella Esposito, will share two case studies developed in Southern Italy.
On Wednesday, October 9th, as part of Track 1 “Cultural Heritage for Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Futures”, they will share the presentation titled "Stimulating Transitions for Underground Built Heritage Valorisation: Hellenistic Necropolis in Naples” (by Giuseppe Pace, Luisa Fatigati, Gaia Daldanise, Gabriella Esposito). This research, grounded in the COST Action 'Underground Built Heritage as a Catalyst for Community Valorisation,' explores three key underground sites in the Hellenistic Necropolis of Naples: the Augustan aqueduct of Serino, the hypogeum of the Togated, and the hypogeum of the Cristallini. The findings recognize the key role of engagement among community members and local stakeholders, encouraging the construction of collective visions that promote these sites, which are crucial to Neapolitan heritage. By highlighting the significance of preserving these underground treasures, the research seeks to inspire collaborative efforts to manage and valorize these important sites sustainably. This approach emphasizes the role of local communities in safeguarding their heritage and enhancing the cultural landscape of Naples.
On the same day, Giuseppe Pace will take part in the session “What Urban Planning for Climate Neutral Smart Cities?" organized by ASSURB, the National Association of Town, Country and Environmental Planners.
On Thursday, October 10th, as part of Track 2 “Innovation, Creativity, Legacy: Cities of/for Tomorrow”, the presentation titled “A Place-Based Approach to Sustainable Innovation and Civic Engagement in Marginalized Territories: the Val d’Agri Case Study” (by Giuseppe Pace, Valeria Catanese, Stefania Oppido, Maria Scalisi, and Gabriella Esposito) will be given. This work is grounded in the Rinnova project proposal and focuses on a subsequent civic engagement campaign initiated by a multidisciplinary research group in Val d’Agri, an area in Basilicata region facing marginalization processes. The study illustrates how action research protocols and collaborative methods - such as multi-stakeholder workshops, living labs, and co-design activities – can facilitate dialogue between researchers and local communities to identify needs, expectations, and potential sustainability solutions, highlighting the potential for collective action to drive positive change.
Last but not least, Giuseppe Pace will serve as rapporteur for Track 2 and will present the final report of the track on Friday, October 11. His presentation will encapsulate the key discussions and insights gathered throughout the sessions, highlighting innovative approaches and strategies for sustainable urban development.
