III General Assembly Bio-Plastics Europe - Rome 21-23 sept. 2023
III General Assembly Bio-Plastics Europe - Rome 21-23 sept. 2023

The interconnected reality and speed of information which characterize these last decades define social, health and environmental events as relevant markers of the priorities of international research. The duty of research actors is to find solutions as valid synthesis between knowledge and vision of the future, in which the generous sharing of results (such as that occurred during the recent pandemic and in general such as that provided by the “open access” modality) may become common and usual action. The European vision, the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and the 2030 Agenda pinpoint sustainability as the strategic asset to promote the coordinated and joint action of competences and capabilities within our research entities and through various social, entrepreneurial, and territorial sectors. Vast and multisectoral projects such as BPE manifest the commitment of science to create opportunities of discussion based on new paradigms of social innovation.

This is the context in which the Third General Assembly of the European Research Project BPE – BioPlastics Europe will take place, centred on the development and implementation of sustainable solutions for the production and use of bioplastics and bio-degradable plastic materials from renewable sources to safeguard environmental quality of seas and land, as well as define circular economy approaches for the entire bioplastics production chain.

Lasting four years, with a EU funding of 8.1m€ through the Horizon 2020 programme, BPE carries out an eco-sustainable and holistic approach aimed at identifying the environmental risks connected to the use of bioplastics, as well as evaluating possible contamination effects of in-use recycled plastic materials. It also identifies proper strategies to re-use materials to guarantee security particularly in the agrifood, packaging and toy sectors.

The model adopted by the consortium is in line with the EU strategy: solutions supporting innovation and technology transfer policies are co-designed, co-developed and co-implemented in a multidisciplinary and participatory process, thanks to the large European network and the international cooperation with a Malaysia partner, as well as the involvement of numerous high profile steakholders. Among the most relevant steakholders: Tetrapak, Unilever, Regione Liguria, Costa Edutainment spa (Acquario di Genova), AMIU spa, IREN spa, Basf, Novamont, Sirmax-Microtec, Biorepack.

The BPE project gathers 21 partners from ten European countries, among which Italy through the Assobioplastiche Association, Ticass scrl, Universita’ di Bologna and Cnr (National Research Council) with three research institutes: Ipcb, Scitec and Ibf. The scientific coordinator for Cnr was originally the late colleague Mario Malinconico, a charismatic and expert scientist in the field of valorisation of plastic waste, of biopolymers and bioplastics.

Rome as the site for this meeting had long been promoted by our coordinator as a sign of the commitment of the Italian scientific community to the themes of sustainability.

The network is composed by: Hochschule Fur Angewandte Wissenschaften Hamburg Germany(capofila), Ticass scrl Italy, Fraunhofer Gesellschaft Zur Foerderung Der AngewandtenForschung E.V.
