International Conference "Daylighting Rivers: Inquiry Based Learning for Civic Ecology"

Daylighting Rivers engages secondary school students in inquiry based and interdisciplinary learning, focusing on land and river use and transformations, with an emphasis on the ways in which urban growth impacts local river ecosystems. Three pilot schools in Europe have successfully implemented this approach, through learning units which investigate different aspects of the local rivers, from their biodiversity to the environmental threats they face.
The conference will showcase contributions from stakeholders involved in different sectors of river studies and management. It will include sessions with a diversity of speakers, who will present scientific and professional case studies in the fields of innovative education methodologies, gamification and the use of digital technologies, citizen science and river management and restoration.
In the framework of the project, the international competition “Schools in Action for Daylighting Rivers” has brought together groups of students who are eager to discover the rivers of their area, inspiring global action for sustainability. The winners of the international competition will be announced on the second day of the conference.
