Via Nizza, 52 - 10124 Torino, Italy

On behalf of all the scientific organizing board members, we would like to welcome all interested in attending the second 'Metabolism meets Function' meeting, at the Department of Molecular Biotechnology and Health Sciences of the University of Torino. This is a joint initiative of University of Torino, University of Padova and  the University of Bari "Aldo Moro", to expand our knowledge in the field of cancer metabolism.

Cancer is a complex disease involving numerous tempo-spatial changes in cell biology, which ultimately lead to malignant tumors. Despite intense research effort and huge advances in our knowledge, cures or long-term management strategies for metastatic cancer are as challenging today as they ever were.

Emerging evidence indicates that transformed cells modify their metabolism to meet the demanding steps of tumor initiation and progression. Metabolism can support directly cancer cell transformation or support the biological steps boosting cancer growth. Understanding the metabolic preferences and the limiting steps for tumor progression holds the promise to provide new insights into cancer biology and define new therapeutical tools to fight cancer. New knowledge suggests a very complex scenario, in which cancer cell metabolism is intimately interweaved with tumors oncogenic drivers, metabostemness and the tumor microenvironment such as fibroblasts and macrophages. We are just starting to unravel it.
This one-day meeting will explore these links between altered cancer metabolism and the common cancer hallmarks and further expand current ideas on how a view of cancer as primarily a metabolic disease will impact approaches to cancer treatment.
